In previous blog posts, we’ve discussed the benefits of remote computer repair. It can be fast, simple and effective. And thanks to powerful handheld devices like iPhones and BlackBerries, remote computer repair is now more mobile than ever. But can a handheld device really offer the same remote computer repair features that’s possible with a PC or a laptop? With RDM+, it’s more than possible. It’s easy.
One advantage is that you can use the RDM+ Remote Access program from just about everywhere. You don’t have to be at home, and you don’t have to be near a wifi hotspot.
RDM+ makes it easy to access laptop, home office, or work computers. All that’s required is that each computer has installed and registered the free RDM+ remote computer repair software. And RDM+ can even work with a VPN or firewall. According to the RDM+ remote computer repair manual, “RDM+ Desktop connects to RDM+ Online Service as usual Web browser (using HTTP requests through port 80) and it doesn’t require direct access to the computer or other special router settings. But if the proxy server is used in your local network, you should specify proxy settings.”
Of course there are some differences between performing remote computer repair on a handheld device than with a normal-sized PC. For one, the display is smaller. A lot smaller. But at least RDM+ offers pinch-zoom and rotation features that come with many iPhone apps. You can also move the desktop mouse with your finger, or you can switch to “alternative mode” where the computer desktop is moved.
According to the app’s developer, SHAPE Services, future versions of RDM+ will come with file transfer options. RDM+ retails for $19.99 and is available at the iPhone App Store and the BlackBerry App World. Do you know of any other useful remote desktop clients? Let us know.
